Cymbals Eat Guitars-Rough Trade-09.11.2009

Fresh from CMJ Stateside, Cymbals Eat Guitars performed to a sombre, yet, entranced audience at Rough Trade last night, in advance of their impending support slot with The Flaming Lips, tonight and tomorrow, at the Troxy.

Kicking off their 40 minute set with the imploding …And the Hazy Sea, the boys raucously lambasted their instruments; treating their captivated observers to a visual and sonorous spectacle awry with strident intent and unrestrained vivacity.

Their performance continued in the same audacious, unstoppable vein; attacking bystanders with a blustery array of ferocious noise. Further in a more solemn mood took hold via renditions of the downbeat Tunguska and Share, before an electric, emulsifying climax of sweat, blood and sound in the form of Wind Phoenix.

Technically impressive, lamenting melodies intercut with summery, vibrant interludes is what this band seems to do best; juxtaposing melancholy with hopeful intensity to create a painfully inspiring and uplifting web of intrinsically beautiful sound that commands a second listen. CEG is definitely an act to catch live and, despite good reviews, their Why there are Mountains, seems somewhat lacking in comparison to what was witnessed here.
