Surfin' USA

I often fall in love; and I can assure you that I’m not talking about ‘people’ when I say this. A very clever man, with a beard, once said, ‘life without music would be a mistake’.

He also said, ‘there is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness’. Right this second I’m enamoured with American bands; and my reason, they just do the floaty, summery music that I adore a little better than us soggy, miserable Brits. At this shitty point in time, the goddamned weather is making me blue and possibly a little stir crazy. So fuck it: seriously. I’m going to talk about love, purely in terms of music, you understand.

Having spent this day, sat, staring at a cold, sun-glazed world through glass (and maybe the odd tear), the only thing that has kept my spirits reasonably temperate is the fact that I would eventually be permitted to leave the office, blast out some awesome tunes through my kick-ass speakers and dance it off.

So who are my latest loves?

Fresh from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Seamonster buzz out happily rumbling melodies that chirp with vibrant, whistling riffs. Their wistful, murmuring beats are evocative of a warm tide ebbing towards a sandy beach. Yet, simultaneously, they seem pensive and almost mechanical; like the twinkling, rattling inner workings of a1950s funfair. At times reminiscent of Panda Bear, Seamonster capture summer through peculiar music-box intricacy and voluble, earnest lullabies that not only resonate, but transport.

Ohio’s finest Trouble Books’ vulnerable, intricate intermissions rocket with buoyant warmth and force; taking the breath from your chest and flying away with it. Whispering bursts of elaborate electricity, like sprockets, mesh together to create symbiotic, united movement; which is stirring, exuberant and inspiring.

Hazy and longing, glinting like the sun asunder, Best Coast dazzle with their fragmented, distorted and dreamy kind of pop. One of my absolute favourite bands at the moment, their sanguine, summer melodies are blithe and carefree; encapsulating a bygone age of vivacious optimism and serene days spent on the beach. Think surfers, candy floss, California, Lomography and the Beach Boys and you’ve got Best Coast.

Pulsating, fluttering and ethereal, Jeans Wilder purveys melancholy lo-fi musings that echo with rapture and a sweet kind of euphoria. Sophisticated in feeling, if not in technical complexity, songs such as Sea You and Cold Shoulder are jarring and resound with inherent richness and optimistic tenacity.

N.B the clever man was Nietzsche. He also said, ‘only sick music makes money today’ but I think I’ll save that topic for another time.
