I’m listing to Sparklehorse. It’s been a while since I did this and it is sad that my reason for reminiscing tonight is one so tragic.
Mark Linkous is dead. He shot himself through the heart.
Engineer, producer, writer and performer Linkous was the human embodiment of the indie DIY ethos. He produced dreamy and intimate melodies that always sounded warm yet melancholy and detached; as if he was playing underwater or down the telephone.
A rare and majestic talent, he found beauty in fragility and falling apart.
With frayed, glimmering optimism, his songs were always to come from a very sad place; a place, in the end, that not even he could conquer.
Suicide seems all the more sad, for its predictability. In his music he always seemed frail, vulnerable, damaged; searching for comfort and solace in any beauty he could find in this world.
Rest in peace Mark; I hope you've found what you were searching for.
