HEALTH | Chrome Hoof | Zun Zun Egui | Ether 10 | April 22 | Queen Elizabeth Hall

On a gin soaked Thursday night I was part of something that I am still unsure what to make of. So let me try to make sense of it now.

The show on the whole left me far out of my comfort zone; it defies reason to listen to something that inherently loud in such civilised surroundings. Taking up my leather clad seat in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the start of Zun Zun Equi’s set; I couldn’t help but think to myself, ‘what am I actually doing here?’ Admittedly I’m not a massive fan of heavy, noise bands, but curiosity had, on this occasion, got the better of me.

ZZE opened to a handful of intrigued spectators. They were immediately captivating; encompassing onlookers in a churning mesh of noise. With psycadellic elements to their crystalline sound, this foursome conjured something beautiful though extended punky jams and percussive innovation.

Maverick, metamorphic 10+ piece Chrome Hoof were next to wow. Manifesting a visual and sonorous spectacle of theatrical funk, rave, metal and doom-disco, they blended musical styles with an impressive deliverance. Creating a unique rainbow blaze of tenacious, futuristic sounds they fascinated and beguiled.

In the foyer, lo-fi noise collective HEALTH went on to ravage onlookers. With rawness and urgency the troupe initiated a musical stampede; announcing themselves with a bashing, crashing tirade of noise that reverberated with breathless energy and pounding drums. HEALTH evoked a sense of orchestrated chaos in their short set; before leaving their energised audience desolated.
